Susan Collins's Support For Kavanaugh 'Fake Feminism,' Former Obama Aide Suggests

Senator Susan Collins’ support for Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh can be best described as “fake feminism,” according to former Obama White House Communications Director Jen Psaki.

“She struck a nerve to me in what she said and how she voted, because that’s political cowardice,” Psaki said, the Hill reports, “that is somebody who is pretending to be a feminist but that is fake feminism.”

Although Senator Susan Collins’ support for Kavanaugh can be considered fake feminism, according to Psaki, the Democratic Party is to blame for Kavanaugh’s success as well. The Democrats, Psaki suggests, “mishandled things.”

Still, the Brett Kavanaugh saga is “about a woman who is accusing someone of sexual assault, something that often many, many women do not come forward to do,” the former Obama aide concluded.

Nikk "Red Weezil" Dakota (R), from the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, celebrates with others from various tribes during Indigenous Peoples' Day events at the Daybreak Star Cultural Center on October 13, 2014 in Seattle, Washington. Earlier that afternoon, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray signed a resolution designating the second Monday in October to be Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Today, Native people across the country are celebrating their heritage, and a growing number of cities are joining them. At least 60 cities and four states across the United States have officially stopped observing Columbus Day, opting to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day instead.

Tacoma, Washington, and Rochester, New York, are the newest additions to the list, the Indian Country Today is reporting. Nashville and San Francisco will also be celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day for the first time this year. The largest city on the list is Los Angeles, the country’s second largest city by population. The states of Minnesota, Vermont, Alaska, and South Dakota also celebrate the day.

Berkeley, California, became the first city to replace Columbus Day with a day that celebrates indigenous peoples in 1992, on the heels of the First Continental Conference on 500 Years of Indian Resistance in Quito, Ecuador, in 1990, Time magazine reported.

Limo Crash kills four sisters.

On Saturday, a limo crash in upstate New York that killed 20 people became the deadliest American crash in nine years. According to the New York Post, among the victims were four sisters celebrating the youngest one’s birthday along with three of their husbands.

The sisters’ aunt, Barbara Douglas, reported that “One just got married, and that’s what this was — her new husband was giving her a surprise birthday party.”

The tragedy took place in Schoharie, about 35 miles west of Albany, when an SUV stretch limo failed to stop at an intersection and went speeding into a parking lot, killing two pedestrians along the way. It eventually careened into a small ravine, killing all 18 of the passengers inside, including the driver.

Witness Jessica Kirby, 36, told the New York Times that the limo was allegedly speeding.

eric barber referenced coat hangers

A West Virginia politician, apparently taking delight in the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, told women to “get your coat hangers” ready now that the anti-abortion judge has been confirmed.

As Raw Story reports, Eric Barber, a city councilman in Parkersburg, has said in the past that he left the Democratic Party because it is “anti-Christian,” made a comment on Facebook referencing Saturday’s Senate vote to confirm Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh is believed by many to be the Supreme Court vote that will overturn Roe v. Wade, which would allow states to make abortion completely illegal.

In his post, he made an apparently gleeful reference to back-alley abortions.

“Better get you’re [sic] coathangers ready liberals.”

Kelly Beckers has not eaten in four years.

A woman from the Netherlands has gone without food for four years, thanks to a rare disorder that has essentially destroyed her digestive system, the Daily Mail is reporting.

Kelly Beckers, 21, was born breech, which doctors believe caused her digestive issues. Born with chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIP), she is unable to digest any food whatsoever. That means that she receives nourishment through an IV inserted directly into an artery near her heart. An ostomy bag collects feces.

So sick is the young woman that she has not eaten food in four years. At this point, she’s learned to live without it, to the point that she says that she doesn’t miss it. She does, however, miss the social aspect of eating — hanging around with friends over a meal, for example.

Turns out, Brad Pitt isn’t dating MIT professor Neri Oxman after all. Brad Pitt and Dr. Oxman were rumored to be seeing each other back in April when Pitt visited MIT’s Media Lab. According to People, Dr. Oxman “emphatically” denied dating the actor in a recent interview with the New York Times.

Dr. Oxman founded a discipline called material ecology, which unites synthetic biology and 3D printing. French President Emmanuel Macron Readies Sweeping Changes To His Administration

French President Emmanuel Macron.

Beleaguered by months of scandals and setbacks, French President Emmanuel Macron is preparing extensive changes to his administration in an effort to resurrect a once-promising presidency. Bloomberg reports that Macron is going to announce a new cabinet on either Monday or Tuesday in an attempt to inject new life and leadership into the French government.

The drastic move comes on the heels of last week’s sudden, shocking resignation of Macron’s most senior cabinet official, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb. Collomb’s resignation was the second messy resignation from Macron’s cabinet — after Energy Minister Nicolas Hulot quit his position on live radio in August — with both officials denigrating Macron’s leadership in the process. Since Collomb’s resignation, Macron and Prime Minister Edouard Philippe have engaged in intense discussions about how best to move forward, and decided to transition in an entirely different direction.

Police Department That Killed Walter Scott Used Flashlight With Nazi Symbol To Beat Black Suspects, Suit Claim

A Nazi symbol was found etched into the handle of a flashlight that white police officers from the North Charleston police department used to beat black suspects, a new lawsuit claims.

The South Carolina police department has been under fire since a white officer shot suspect Walter Scott in the back, killing him. Video showed an officer shooting the unarmed Scott as he ran away, then appearing to plant a weapon on him. While that officer was on trial, fellow North Charleston cop Leroy Hair was arrested and charged with hitting a handcuffed black man.

A search of Hair’s car turned up a police-issued flashlight that had a racist Nazi symbol “SS” etched into the side along with the words “The Wig Splitter,” the Post and Courier reported. The Nazi symbol is one popular among white supremacist groups and refers to the Nazi police squad that carried out genocide.

A red squirrel climbs on tree branches in Scotland during the Autumn.

NBC 4 shared news on Friday of a viral video depicting a man performing CPR on a squirrel. Yes, let that sink in. Apparently, 19-year-old Chris Felix of Minnesota hit the squirrel in his car, so he pulled over and got out to check on the little guy. The video comes from the body-cam of a police officer who approached Felix to investigate what this young man was doing on the side of the road.

The squirrel wasn’t breathing, so Felix decided to perform CPR. Yes, Felix has CPR training, so he knew just what to do. He put on some gloves and began giving the squirrel tiny chest compressions because it wasn’t breathing. Felix said he is an animal lover, and he just wanted to do what he could to help and save the little, injured squirrel.

Democrats Dial Back Brett Kavanaugh Impeachment Talk, While Trump Calls It ‘An Insult To The American Public’

Brett Kavanaugh is to be sworn in to serve his duties before sitting on the Supreme Court.

Brett Kavanaugh’s seat on the Supreme Court is barely warm, and already Democrats are putting the kibosh on talk of impeaching him, The Washington Examiner is reporting.

“Several” Congressional Democrats — including some who are up for re-election in the 2018 midterms — are considering initiating impeachment proceedings against Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh was bedeviled by accusations of sexual misconduct during his confirmation hearings. The inflammatory and contentious hearings — and the heated public response generated by them — failed to derail his confirmation, however. Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate 50-48 along largely partisan lines.

Having failed to stop his nomination, some Democrats have turned their attention to the impeachment process as a way of mitigating what they feel will be the Court’s impending sharp turn to the right as Kavanaugh takes his seat. Kavanaugh replaces retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, as the Inquisitr previously detailed.

Scott Lisinicchia: Limo Driver In Crash That Killed 20 Was Reportedly Unlicensed, Car Failed Safety Inspection

Scott Lisinicchia was reportedly lacking the proper license when he got behind the wheel of a limo in Upstate New York, losing control and leading to a crash that killed 20 people.

The 53-year-old Lisinicchia was identified this week as the driver of the 2001 Ford Excursion limo, CBS News reported, and authorities are still trying to put together all of the details from the crash. Police said the limo sped through a dangerous intersection in the town of Schoharie near Albany, crashing into the parking lot of popular tourist destination Apple Barrel Country.

Though police had not yet released Lisinicchia’s name, the man’s twin brother also identified him as the limo driver, WTVH reported.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo gave an update on the deadly crash, saying on Monday that the limo had failed a safety inspection just days before the accident.

In this handout photo provided by the Supreme Court of the United States, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, (Retired) administers the Judicial Oath to Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh as his wife Ashley Kavanaugh holds the Bible while joined by their daughters Margaret and Liza, in the Justices Conference Room at the Supreme Court Building on Oct. 6.

New Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh has hired an all-female law clerk staff, a first in the history of the body, according to the New York Times Sunday.

Kavanaugh was besieged by charges of sexual misconduct by several women near the end of the confirmation process. In an additional hearing, one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, testified against him in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

That led to a one-week delay in his confirmation vote while the FBI completed a supplemental background check. The U.S. Senate confirmed Kavanaugh to the highest court in the land on a 50-48 vote, according to CBS News.

The New York Times wrote that while some of Kavanaugh’s critics grudgingly praised him for hiring the women for the four coveted clerkships, they found it hard to let go the contention that surrounded his nomination.

City backlit by the sun

The cost is extreme. The things that have to be done are extreme. But scientists say humankind has one last chance to combat climate change. And if humankind doesn’t take that chance, well, say good-bye to life as you know it.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released a special report on the effects of global warming, and the findings are extremely grim. According to co-chair of the panel, Jim Skea, an “unprecedented” amount of changes are needed to save the world. He says the world needs “changes to energy systems, changes to the way we manage land, changes to the way we move around with transportation,” as reported by the BBC.

Hurricane Michael Heads To Florida As Category 3

Michael Nelson floats in a boat made from a metal tub and fishing floats after the Neuse River went over its banks and flooded his street during Hurricane Florence Sept. 13 in New Bern, North Carolina.

Hurricane Michael could slam into the Florida panhandle as a dangerous Category 3 storm by Wednesday evening, according to the Weather Channel.

Forecasters have said that the storm is predicted to intensify as the hurricane, currently a Category 1 storm, churns through the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane is expected to hit the northeastern Gulf with strong winds, hard rain that could lead to flooding, and a significant storm surge, said the network.

Category 3 hurricanes, according to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, has wind speeds from 111 to 129 miles per hour, the Weather Channel noted. The scale does not measure or predict other threats from a hurricane, like storm surge, rainfall, or tornadoes, the channel noted.

The Weather Channel said Monday that Hurricane Michael was hovering about 30 miles northwest off Cuba’s western edge inching northward.
