Just around the time that Donald Trump fired James Comey from his position as head of the FBI, the talk comparing Donald Trump’s administration to that of Richard Nixon picked up. Since that time, after Robert Mueller was appointed as a special prosecutor, those personally familiar with the ins and outs of the Watergate scandal started weighing in about the comparisons, and as time went on, some like Washington Post investigative journalist Carl Bernstein suggested that the Trump presidency was actually “worse than Watergate.”
Mediaite says that beyond Bernstein’s statement that the Trump administration is worse than Watergate, he also added that the NYT‘s report on Trump’s questions about the Justice Department’s possible investigations into Hillary Clinton and James Comey was eerily similar to the articles of impeachment used against the former President Richard Nixon.
Donald Trump “seems rattled” by the latest moves by Robert Mueller in the Russia collusion investigation, according to a report by NBC News on Monday, and Trump’s mood is likely to get worse this week as Mueller prepares to unleash a series of potentially devastating revelations — including a court filing scheduled for Friday that will include details about “crimes and lies” by Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign chief Paul Manafort.
Mueller will also file documents in two other cases involving former close associates of Trump who have pleaded guilty to crimes in connection with the Russia investigation — Trump’s original national security adviser Michael Flynn and his former, longtime personal lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen, according to NBC, which reported that the new Mueller documents will contain new revelations about “bad acts” committed by Flynn and Cohen, but for which they have not been criminally charged.
Donald Trump’s son Eric launched into an angry tirade against White House adviser Kellyanne Conway’s husband George, who’s a vocal critic of the U.S. president.
Eric took to Twitter on Monday to blast the Washington, D.C., lawyer, claiming his actions were “horrible” and showed disrespect toward his wife, as reported by the Daily Mail.
“Of all the ugliness in politics, the utter disrespect George Conway shows toward his wife, her career, place of work, and everything she has fought SO hard to achieve, might top them all,” the president’s son said.
“[Kellyanne Conway] is a great person and frankly his actions are horrible,” he added.
United States special counsel Robert Mueller will file a sentencing recommendation for Michael Flynn by tonight’s midnight deadline, the details of which could reveal new insights into the Mueller probe– including potential criminal indictments– as it details Flynn’s cooperation with the special counsel, according to CNN.
The court filing is expected to detail both the crimes that Flynn was involved with as well as how he has cooperated with the Mueller investigation over the course of the past year. Flynn was indicted and pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators on December 1, 2017. Based on the information in the filing, the federal court will consider Flynn’s cooperation when it issues his sentence. According to Reuters, the maximum sentence for lying to the FBI is five years, but Flynn’s plea agreement calls for as many as six months and as little as no jail time for Flynn, and he can ask the court not to impose a fine.
Jeff Zucker, the president of CNN is dissecting the reasons that Donald Trump hates his network so much and he believes it’s personal. On a recent podcast, Zucker explains why he thinks the president keeps attacking the network and why it’s not likely to stop any time soon.
The Huffington Post says that Zucker spoke at length to political commentator David Axelrod on his podcast, “The Axe Files,” and shared what believes to be the core of Trump’s seeming obsession with disrespecting CNN and its employees. Zucker says he and Trump used to be friends, and so Trump assumed he would get special treatment if he ever entered politics.
Prince Charles will be attending the funeral on Wednesday for the late George H.W. Bush, 41st United States president, who died at age 94 on Friday. The heir to the British throne will be representing Queen Elizabeth at the funeral, according to a statement made on behalf of Prince Charles, which People shared.
Clarence House, the official residence of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, wrote a tweet on Tuesday morning to confirm his attendance.
“The Prince of Wales will attend the state funeral of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush. The service will take place tomorrow at The National Cathedral in Washington. The Prince will be representing Her Majesty The Queen,” the tweet read.
The queen had previously expressed her condolences in a statement on the royal family’s website. The message was addressed to the president of the United States and the people of America.
A police officer in London charged with protecting the royal family is being accused of texting a teen who was visiting Buckingham Palace with her mother for an event hosted by Queen Elizabeth.
The Vancouver Sun says that Royal Protection Officer Andrew Daly is not contesting that he sent a sexually suggestive message to a teen outside a Buckingham Palace garden party hosted by the queen. Daly is said to have asked the 16-year-old girl for her number and then sending her texts that were deemed “inappropriate.”
Daly is not denying that in 2016 while protecting the royal family at an event, his behavior was unprofessional, but he did not attend a police misconduct hearing today to review the evidence. The girl has not been identified as she was a minor at the time of the alleged incident, but she testified today in a closed meeting.
On Monday, the frustrations of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border waiting to hear about a decision made over their plea for asylum boiled over, and many started climbing over the fence.
As reported by Business Insider, migrants have been stuck in the border city of Tijuana, and on Monday Reuters journalists witnessed over two dozen of them climb over the 10-foot-high fence in under an hour. At present, the border at Tijuana is protected by a fence made of thick sheets and pillars of metal.
While many of those hopping the fence immediately surrendered themselves to officials on the U.S. side who were waiting to take them into custody under floodlights, a small group tried to run to avoid capture. They were hoping that climbing over the fence would allow them to apply for asylum more quickly since they are now on U.S. soil.
Just in time for the holiday season, Nabisco released a unique invention based on the brand’s popular Oreo cookie — a miniature Oreo cookie record player. Instead of an average record player, though, this one plays music by actually spinning cookies. It doesn’t quite sound like a device that would really work, but Oreo fans were impressed to find out that it does.
The “record” player, called the Oreo Music Box, runs for just $19.99 on Amazon — but the product is currently (and unsurprisingly) sold out, according to NME. The music box comes included in a collectible tin gift box with other Oreo products, such as original Oreo cookies, White Fudge cookies, and Oreo Thins.
Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan may play a cold, mean character on the AMC hit show, The Walking Dead, but he proved to his fans this week he has a heart of gold. After seeing an Instagram post from North Carolina-based Carolina Waterfowl Rescue regarding a bonded donkey and emu that can’t live without the other, Morgan stepped up and offered to take both of them, according to his Twitter account.
The male donkey and female emu, who were named Jack and Diane, were rescued from a farm in South Carolina after the owner abandoned the farm and the animals, according to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. According to the Charlotte Observer, the donkey and emu were housed together at the farm and had clearly bonded. Jennifer Gordon, founder of the nonprofit organization, knew it would be difficult to adopt them out together. If the two are separated, Diane “drums” for Jack, something only a female emu does to call for their mate.
Prince Charles of Wales had the opportunity to meet with many brave individuals who persist in their faith despite facing the risk of death. According to the London Times, he met with a group of Christians in the Middle East that are under attack for their faith, including those who have been forced from their homes due to the attack of the Islamic State upon minority faiths. The prince says he was humbled by the experience and later spoke out at a service at Westminster Abbey regarding the need for peaceful coexistence.
The prince shared the story of a brave Iraqi nun who helped rescue many Christians from religious persecution. The Dominican sister from Nineveh, Iraq met with Prince Charles earlier this year to tell her story. She guided over 100,000 Christians to safety after they were forced out of their homes and communities which were destroyed by Islamic State extremists. Although she faced death herself, she put her life on the line to serve others.
Donald Trump Jr. is using the Christmas season to draw further attention to his father, President Donald Trump. Don Jr. posted a meme to his Instagram page depicting a statue of his father being used as the primary ornament on top of a Christmas tree. The sparse tree has a few traditional ornaments, with the statue of Trump placed as the tree topper. The mini version of the president shows Trump standing on a podium and raising his fist in a less than celebratory way, according to Newsweek.
“Couldn’t decide between an angel or a star. So I picked both,” the meme says.
Knowing the meme might not be taken so lightly by some viewers, the president’s son made sure to let his followers know he was kidding. He captioned the post with a variety of hashtags including “triggered,” “Christmas,” “tree,” and “star,” before finishing it off with a few American flag emojis.
Robert Mueller released his sentencing memo for former national security adviser Michael Flynn late on Friday, which suggested that the retired general offered the special counsel’s Russia investigation “substantial” assistance.
However, reports suggest that the biggest bombshell in Mueller’s heavily redacted court document is that the probe into the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russian officials was not even the most important investigation for which Flynn provided his “substantial” help. What was the most important one? Mueller leaves the answer a mystery, except to say that it is a “criminal” investigation, as the addendum to the sentencing memo filed with the United States District Court in Washington D.C. states.
Tom Cruise has been a movie star for over 30 years, but he still cares a great deal about how his movies look when you watch them at home.
That’s one takeaway from a video that was shared on Cruise’s Twitter account on Tuesday. In the 90-second video, Cruise and his director friend Christopher McQuarrie speak from the set of the sequel to Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick, in order to remind those watching to remember to turn off the motion smoothing on their televisions. The video had been viewed more than a million times on its first day.
While promoting the DVD and Blu-ray release of the 2018 movie Mission: Impossible – Fallout, in which Cruise stars, McQuarrie wrote and directed, and both men produced, the two men have something to say about making the film as good as possible.
“We want you to enjoy it to the fullest possible effect, just as you would in a theater,” McQuarrie says of the Mission:Impossible movie.
A 55-year-old Detroit woman was leaving her home for church on Sunday morning when a stranger tried to grab her, then forced his way into the home. She responded by retrieving a gun and shooting him in the chest, killing the man.
As WXYZ reported, the incident happened at around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday as the woman, her daughter, and her mother left their home on Mark Twain Street. Police said the pair retreated back into the house after the man accosted them, and the mother pulled a gun.
The man was struck at least once in the chest and was declared dead at the scene. Police said they would not charge the woman who fired the fatal shot, saying she acted in self-defense.
Detroit police added that the home invasion suspect was in his 30s. They did not release his name, nor did they release the names of the three women in the home at the time.
Ninety-five-year-old former senator Bob Dole was one of many Americans who came out to pay tribute to former president George H.W. Bush who passed away at 94-years-old on Friday. Hundreds attended the late president’s memorial service at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday to pay their respects to a man who devoted his life to serving his country. Dole had a special relationship with Bush, having served alongside him during World War II. The pair would later compete against Ronald Reagan for the Republican nomination in the 1980 presidential election. Although Dole lost that particular election, his service for his country was far from over. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service in the military and worked in the Senate for many years, according to Today.
A shocking incident at Heinz Field during a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday has been caught on camera and now police are investigating. Footage of the incident shows a Steelers fan with his hands around the neck of a female Chargers fan. The husband of the woman has since confirmed that she is pregnant.
According to WPXI News, Channel 11 caught footage of the horrific incident “as the Chargers pulled off an unprecedented comeback on the Steelers’ home field.” Further footage of the incident was also captured by a freelance photographer, according to the Pittsburgh Current.
Daniel Minshew, the husband of the woman who was choked, has already spoken to police about the incident. According to Channel 11, the Pittsburgh police are investigating the incident and criminal charges may be filed against the errant Steelers fan. As yet, this man has not been identified by police.
The Iowa father of a baby boy who was found dead wearing a maggot-infested diaper in a baby swing will spend the rest of his days behind bars after a judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole on Tuesday in Chickasaw County District Court.
Zachary Koehn, 29, was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder last month in connection to the death of his 4-month-old son Sterling Koehn, who had been wearing the same diaper for nine to 14 days when he was found dead on Aug. 30, 2017, in the swing at his parents’ Alta Vista apartment, KRON-TV is reporting. Koehn’s mandatory sentence comes after a judge denied his request for a new trial Tuesday, according to the report.
Thirty-seven-year-old Odessa, Florida, woman Kristen Yaldor was reportedly the victim of a hippopotamus attack that took place while she and her husband were canoeing down the Zambezi River in Africa.
As related by the Tampa Bay Times, the incident took place when Kristen was celebrating her 37th birthday with her husband Ryan Yaldor as they traveled to South Africa and Zimbabwe for a getaway that was also to include “safaris [and] a drum and dinner show.” When the couple took a canoe trip near Victoria Falls in the Zambezi River, they reportedly encountered a mother hippopotamus, who tried to protect her young calf by swimming underneath the canoe and flipping it into the air.
Our current food habits are draining the planet of its resources, contributing to cataclysmic climate change, and leaving billions of people underfed, reports the Guardian. A report from the World Resources Institute (WRI) warns that if meat production continues at its current rate, we will need 50 percent more food by 2050 to feed a growing world population. Additionally, if we don’t decrease production by two-thirds, the world’s remaining forests will face complete destruction and climate change will continue spiraling out of control.
Meat and dairy production uses 83 percent of all farmland available and also produces 60 percent of the world’s agricultural emissions. The WRI warns that in addition to the environmental concerns that arise from the consumption and production of food, humans are facing an “existential issue.”
Tim Searchinger, of the WRI and Princeton University, expands on the issue.
