Police tape blocks the way at a crime scene

There are some people who can’t stand Christmas songs at all and they hate that they end up being played repeatedly during the months of November and December. Some believe that they’re overplayed and make people angry, but festive music certainly has a way of calming the nerves of others. It’s really hard to argue with the fact that a recent armed standoff came to an end after a SWAT member agreed to sing “White Christmas” to the armed man.

As reported by the Associated Press, a very tense and long standoff took place on Christmas Day. Around 9 p.m. on the holiday, police responded to a call placed by a concerned family member who asked them to go check on 34-year-old Nathaniel Lewis.

Mollie Tibbetts

The mother of Mollie Tibbetts, the Brooklyn, Iowa woman who was murdered last summer, allegedly by an illegal immigrant, has taken in the teenage son of a family with ties to the woman’s alleged murderer, the New York Post is reporting.

Back in July, Mollie, at the time a 20-year-old University of Iowa student home for summer break, disappeared after going for a jog. For weeks, the young woman’s disappearance captivated the nation, as her family held out hope that she might be alive. Unfortunately, her decomposing body was found on August 21, after police were led there by 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera, her alleged murderer. Rivera was arrested and charged with murder; as of this writing he remains behind bars, awaiting trial.

Rivera was in the country illegally, part of the large migrant farm-working community in the Tibbetts’ part of Iowa, which is largely composed of undocumented Mexican immigrants.

Roger Stone

Roger Stone, a longtime associate of President Donald Trump, has formally apologized for making false statements to the conspiracy theory website Infowars. The statement has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post, and was also posted on Stone’s social media accounts and website.

“Mr. Stone failed to do proper research before making those statements and improperly relied upon information conveyed to him by others,” one part of the statement reads.

According to CNN, the apology stems from a lawsuit filed by Chinese businessman Guo Wengui. In the defamation suit, Guo claims that Stone told lies to Infowars, saying that he was convicted of financial malfeasance in the United States and that he committed election law crimes by donating to Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Stone also said that Guo financially supported the presidential ambitions of former Trump adviser, Steve Bannon.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced on Thursday, December 27, that a 35-year-old named Andrew Pashley from Evergreen, Colorado has been convicted for the illegal sale of big-game wildlife as well as the illegal possession of a mountain lion, Fox News is reporting. The former is a class 6 felony, and Pashley pleaded guilty to both crimes on November 8.

Pashley has officially been sentenced to two years probation and is no longer allowed to hunt, fish, or trap animals. A future court hearing will determine if this is a lifelong ban. If so, the ban will be applicable in 48 states.

“Illegal and unethical actions like what Mr. Pashley participated in put a black eye on hunters, outfitters and houndsmen,” said CPW Wildlife Officer Joe Nicholson in a statement. “Pashley’s actions are those of a poacher, not a hunter, and it is good to bring somebody like Pashley to justice.”

A gavel, with the word "LAW" spelled out below it with refrigerator magnet toys.

The United States federal justice system is getting some much-needed changes.

With the adoption of a bipartisan bill called the First Step Act, which President Donald Trump signed into law earlier this month, thousands of offenders in prisons across the country will be given the opportunity for early release from their sentences, per reporting from Vox.

This law garnered the support of Democrats and Republicans alike, which is a rare accomplishment these days in Washington. But while this law goes a long way toward correcting some wrongs in our justice system, much more work is needed — especially when it comes to younger criminals.

Newspapers that are part of the Tribune Publishing group were hit by an apparent cyberattack this week, which affected printing and distribution of their editions over the weekend.

The Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun, and more publications were affected by the malware breach, according to reporting from the L.A. Times.

The breach affected the process by which newspapers in this publishing group were printed, creating long delays on data that is shared between the publications and their printing presses. As a result, other publications were also hurt by the cyberattack, including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, whose West Coast printing processes rely in part on using the same printing facility as the L.A. Times.

First lady Melania Trump, an image of a giraffe, and an image of a beluga whale.

Move over, blue dress (or was it white?), there’s a new social media phenomenon that’s going to irk the heck out of a lot of people.

This time, however, it’s not an optical illusion that’s at work, but instead, it seems that a technical glitch is at play. And it’s affecting an image that first lady Melania Trump posted more than six years ago.

In August, 2012, Trump posted a picture of a beluga whale to her Twitter account, according to reporting from BNO News. She asked her followers to consider a rather deep question.

“What is she thinking?” Trump wrote.

Late on Saturday night, the image unexpectedly changed into a giraffe.

The image itself has been retweeted more than 47,000 times, and people still reply to it. So one mystery about the photograph is solved — why was anyone looking at a tweet from 2012?

A San Quentin inmate who escaped the penitentiary earlier this week was taken into custody on Saturday afternoon. Shalom Mendoza, 21, was arrested at a Taco Bell in Paso Robles.

Mendoza had already been on the run for three days when the urge for his favorite Taco Bell meal became too much. The escaped convict popped into the chain restaurant and was spotted by a member of the public, per The Mercury News. This civilian contacted the agents who quickly responded to the tip.

It appears as if the civilian recognized Mendoza from descriptions released to the press about the escaped convict. The 21-year-old was described as a 5-foot-5-inch, 177-pound male of Hispanic descent, who had brown hair and brown eyes. The public was warned that Mendoza was considered dangerous. NOVEMBER 03: Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani arrives to campaign for Republican Senate hopeful Mike Braun

Rudy Giuliani, the lawyer for Donald Trump, went on talk shows this morning to say that special counsel Robert Mueller doesn’t have anything on his client. The former NYC mayor spoke at length with radio host John Catsimatidis on the Cats Roundtable about Mueller’s lack of evidence, and what is and is not a crime.

NewsMax says that Giuliani challenged Mueller that it’s time to produce a report. He added that the special counsel has no chance of getting any of the Russians he indicted to come to the United States to testify against Trump.

“They indicted a bunch of Russians who will never come to the United States, which is what we used to call sort of a ‘showboat indictment’ when I was a U.S. attorney. So, I am challenging them: It’s time to put up or shut up. It’s time for them to submit a report.”

Donald Trump owns 17 golf courses, mostly in the United States but also in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Dubai, according to Golf Monthly. And now, those golf courses appear to be under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller as part of Mueller’s probe into Trump’s connections to Russia and whether Russians illegally helped Trump win the 2016 presidential election.

While Mueller and his investigators do not comment publicly on any aspect of their investigation, outside of official court documents, on Saturday the New York Daily News reported that the FBI is now investigating alleged immigration violations at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The allegations against the club — that club officials gave out fake green cards and Social Security numbers to undocumented immigrants, enabling them to work at the Bedminster course — were referred to the FBI by Mueller.

President Trump appears in a suit.

President Donald Trump is again under fire from Democratic partisans, as former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe took to making accusations about his mental and emotional state while being interviewed on CNN’s State of the Union earlier today, December 30.

Per Breitbart, McAuliffe wasted no time in placing the blame for the partial government shutdown squarely on Trump’s shoulders. He elaborated on his political positioning while being questioned by CNN television personality Dana Bash.

“The Democrats should not give an inch on this. Donald Trump owns this. He has been in the White House. He has been isolated. He is too emotional. He is too unstable. And he has now forced people to go through the holidays without a paycheck… He is an angry, emotional, unstable man sitting in the White House.”

Hugh Jackman in 'Logan'

Marvel fans are beginning to freak out after noticing that Hugh Jackman’s list of films on Google included Avengers: Endgame. Could Logan himself be appearing in the upcoming Avengers film, or was this some sort of algorithmic accident? It’s likely the latter, as Marvel doesn’t fully own the rights to the X-Men just yet, and is only expected to fully acquire them at the beginning of next year, according to Screen Rant.

The confusion first started when a Twitter user posted the news on the platform Thursday. After searching for “famous Hugh Jackman movies” on Google, a plethora of films popped up, including the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. A search done at the time of writing lists Endgame as the number seven movie in a list of Hugh Jackman flicks, behind films like Logan, Les Miserables, and The Greatest Showman.
