Opening arguments began today for James Alex Fields, Jr.’s trial, Yahoo is reporting. Fields has been accused of ramming his car into a group of protesters in Charlottesville last year, killing one woman named Heather Heyer. A rally, which was dubbed the “Unite the Right” rally, was being held by hundreds of white nationalists, who were protesting the take-down of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. A group of counter-protesters formed in opposition to the white supremacists. The opposing viewpoints resulted in chaos, with physical fighting and the use of smoke bombs and chemical spray.
The Neighborhood Commission 2A, which covers the Foggy Bottom and West End neighborhoods in Washington, D.C., has voted to rename a street “Jamal Khashoggi Way” in honor of the slain reporter.
The street in question is in front of the Saudi Arabian embassy. Re-naming the road will be a lasting and poignant reminder of the role Saudi Arabia played in the murder, which U.S. intelligence believes was ordered by Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The proposal to re-name the street is headed to the District of Columbia city council for approval. The commission usually handles issues like trash collection, zoning, and parking. However, Commissioner James Harnett said that the group was furious about Khashoggi’s murder and the president’s subsequent reaction to it.
At least five teens were taken to a local hospital after eating cannabis-infused gummy bears during gym class in Florida. The gummies were brought to Mulberry Middle School by a 12-year-old boy, but authorities have not yet been able to determine how he obtained them.
According to NBC, the boy has given police “a couple of different stories,” including that he ordered them online and that someone gave them to him on the bus. It is illegal to sell cannabis products online or ship them across state lines, of course, due to the fact that they are classified as a Schedule I drug by the federal government.
Edible forms of cannabis, including the “Green Hornet” gummies that were eaten by the kids in Florida, are becoming more available as more states legalize marijuana on a medical and recreational basis. Medical marijuana was legalized in Florida in 2017, but it remains illegal for anyone without medical permission and anyone below the age of 21.
On Wednesday, Ivanka Trump joined her father Donald Trump in calling for the Russia collusion investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to be shut down, even though as the Inquisitr reported there were indications that she herself could be a subject of Mueller’s investigation. Those indications grew in intensity on Thursday, after former Trump lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen pleaded guilt to lying under oath about the Trump Tower Moscow project — a planned, major real estate development in Russia that remained active at least until June of 2016, according to Cohen’s plea document which was posted online by Vox.
According to a Yahoo! News scoop published late Thursday, Cohen was not the only member of Trump’s inner circle in Mueller’s sights over involvement in the Trump Tower Moscow project. Mueller is now asking serious questions about Trump’s two eldest children, daughter Ivanka Trump and son Donald Trump Jr.
Though he has never served in the military, Donald Trump is very fond of saluting, even when the situation doesn’t call for it. As the media has noticed this habit, they have likened him to Brazilian President-elect Jair Bolsonaro, who has been dubbed “Trump of the Tropics.”
Business Insider says that the public has drawn the comparison between the two bombastic leaders who are prone to “inflammatory rhetoric.”
Today the press noticed that Bolsonaro is displaying another similarity to Trump, as he saluted National Security Advisor John Bolton before leading him into a meeting with his advisors.
The newly elected Brazilian president says he plans to align his policies with Trump and looks forward to accepting an invitation to visit Washington, D.C.
Bolton agrees that Trump and the Brazilian leader are “like-minded.”
“[We] enjoyed a wide-ranging, very productive discussion and look forward to a dynamic partnership.”
Patrick McCalley, 17, was a junior at Carmel High School in Indiana. He had high hopes for the future, and was looking into joining the Air Force after graduation. At noon on October 6, 2016, he was called into the assistant principal’s office due to racially insensitive comments. He had sent a Snapchat to a few of his friends that reportedly trivialized lynching. He was questioned for two hours during an in-school-suspension and apologized for his Snapchat, calling it a “stupid and ignorant joke.” McCalley was given an affidavit by the school which he signed before being escorted out of the building by school authorities. By the time he got home he had decided to take his own life, according to the Indianapolis Star.
The NRA has been hit hard by a sharp drop in revenue, and now the organization has instituted a round of layoffs at NRATV in an effort to make up for the losses.
As The Hill reported, the media wing of the National Rifle Association has laid off several employees after the gun rights lobbying group saw a $55 million drop in revenue from last year. The television network had been the cornerstone of the organization’s push into the media realm, led by NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch in a widely marketed talk show. The NRATV network also showed the gun rights group’s expansion further into right-wing topics and saw it aim to become a competitor to right-leaning outlets Breitbart News and Fox News.
It was not clear exactly how many employees NRATV had to lay off, but network correspondent Cameron Gray took to Twitter to confirm the layoffs and announce that he was among those fired.
A substitute teacher for a Maryland elementary school has been removed from the school after she allegedly taped a child to a chair because he wouldn’t stay in his seat. She is also currently suspended from working at any of the schools in the district. According to People, the teacher became frustrated when a second grader in a class she was subbing for wasn’t listening to instructions.
Although she reportedly asked him to take his seat multiple times, the boy wouldn’t oblige. Eventually she hoped to get his attention by saying that if he didn’t sit down she would tape him to his seat, a claim the child found humorous.
The genetic-editing baby work of He Jiankui has been halted by the Chinese government, citing a violation of Chinese laws and regulations.
Speaking to CCTV reporters on Thursday, Xu Nanping – the deputy minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology – revealed the Ministry deeply opposes Jiankui’s work surrounding genetically editing babies. Moreover, Nanping confirmed the Ministry took necessary actions to suspend all technological and scientific activities surrounding the research.
“The clinical operation of genetic editing for human embryos is strictly prohibited in our country,” the deputy minister explained to the reporters.
“The genetically edited baby incident reported by the media has blatantly violated China’s relevant laws and regulations, and has also broken openly the bottom line of morality and ethics that the academic community has adhered to. It is shocking and unacceptable.
“The next step of the Ministry of Science and Technology will, on the basis of comprehensive and objective investigations, be investigated and dealt with in accordance with the law.”
In a bizarre incident, a teenage girl lost consciousness at Tokyo Disney Resort, Japan, after receiving an awkwardly long kiss from Mickey Mouse.
As reported by the Daily Mail, a spectator filmed the incident where the girl — identified only as Arisu — is featured being kissed by a Disney worker dressed in a Mickey Mouse costume at the Disney Resort which is located in the city of Urayasu. However, the kiss wasn’t a short one and the girl got way more than what she had expected.
As the world’s most famous mouse continued to plant an awkwardly long kiss on the girl’s mouth, she fainted in disbelief because it was too much for her.
Remember the Trump baby blimp?
It seems like the giant inflatable Trump balloon, which first debuted during the American president’s visit to the United Kingdom earlier this year, won’t leave him alone. According to Business Insider, the baby blimp is set to follow Trump all the way to Buenos Aires in Argentina, where the U.S. president is set to join other world leaders for the G20 summit on Friday and Saturday.
President Donald Trump could make the trade war with China worse at the G20 summit, experts at Goldman Sachs predict. Business Insider UK reports that a memo from the investment bank indicates that they believe there’s an “over 50 percent probability” that the trade dispute will escalate as a result of Trump and Xi Jinping’s sideline discussions at this year’s summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
“We currently see ‘escalation’ as the most likely outcome in the next few months..” read the note.
As Business Insider notes, so far the Trump administration has implemented tariffs on approximately half of all Chinese goods imported into the United States. China has retaliated by introducing tariffs of their own on $110 billion worth of US products.
In an exclusive report by Vanity Fair White House correspondent Gabriel Sherman, it was revealed that Trump has been caught totally off guard by former personal attorney Michael Cohen’s stunning admission that he lied to the Congress under oath. The fear in the Trump camp is that special counsel Robert Mueller has set a trap for the president by first getting answers from him which matched Cohen’s responses in relation to Trump Tower Moscow, and then revealing that his former lawyer had indeed been lying to the Congress about it.
“Trump was totally caught off guard by the Cohen plea,” a source told the journalist.
Astrophysicist and Cosmos star Neil deGrasse Tyson is under investigation by the show’s producers for sexual misconduct allegations. Deadline revealed that Fox and National Geographic are looking into reports from three women who claim that the scientist engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior toward them in three separate instances.
A year ago, musician Tchiya Amet accused Tyson of raping her when they were both graduate students. More recently, Dr. Katelyn N. Allers said that Tyson groped her at a party and Ashley Watson, Tyson’s former assistant, said she had to leave her position after the astrophysicist made repeated inappropriate sexual advances toward her.
Allers, who is an Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Bucknell University, says that Tyson touched her inappropriately in 2009 at an after-party for an American Astronomical Society event.
Donald Trump, Jr. is reported to be “very worried” that special counsel Robert Mueller is going to indict him next.
“Don’s been telling people he’s very worried after today,” Vanity Fair quoted a source as saying after it emerged that Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, had lied to Congress about the real estate deal involving the Trump Tower in Moscow. Cohen said in his guilty plea that a negotiation involving the project continued well into 2016, at the same time when Trump asked Russian president Vladimir Putin to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections.
“I knew at the time in that I asserted that all efforts had ceased in January 2016, [that] in fact they continued until June 2016,” Cohen has reportedly admitted.
And while Don, Jr. himself has not corroborated Cohen’s statements, he told the Senate committee last year that he was “peripherally aware” of the deal, but refused to acknowledge that he had played an active deal in the negotiations.
The 41st president of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush, has died at age 94. His death was announced by his family late Friday night (just before midnight). His health was known to have been declining over the past few months.
The entire country mourns the death of Bush, as he was not only credited for ending the Cold War, but for creating the global coalition responsible for ousting the Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Bush’s political career extended over three decades. Bush was the last veteran of World War II to serve as president.
Bush’s political career included serving as the vice president of Ronald Reagan for two terms before becoming the first incumbent vice president to be elected as president dating back to 1836 with Martin Van Buren.
Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro is accusing Donald Trump of waging war against the citizens of his country in the form of U.S. sanctions. Maduro says he’s been forced to raise his country’s minimum wage to make up for the damage he’s blaming on Trump, whom he likens to Adolf Hitler.
The Washington Times says that Maduro is venting his frustrations over the Trump sanctions publicly.
“Just like Hitler persecuted the Jewish people, Donald Trump persecutes the people of Venezuela.”
But critics are blaming Venezuela’s current state on political corruption and mismanagement, combined with two decades of socialist rule.
“Despite having the world’s largest proven oil reserves, Venezuela is in the fifth year of an economic crisis worse than the Great Depression.”
George Herbert Walker Bush has died at the age of 94. The Republican was the 41st president of the United States. His death on Friday, November 30, comes just seven months after his wife, Barbara Bush, died.
“Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died,” his eldest child, former President George W. Bush, said in a statement released by family spokesman Jim McGrath, according to USA Today.
“George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.”
As the news broke late Friday night, many politicians, actors, and notable public figures took to Twitter to express their condolences.
Lisa Vilate Williams was decorating a Christmas tree with her boyfriend’s 3-year-old twins when the man’s ex-wife allegedly shot her in the chest, killing her in front of the young girls, police say.
The murder took place in Salt Lake City this week, with police saying 32-year-old high school teacher Chelsea Waltrous Cook went to the home of her ex-husband to bring cold medicine to one of the children. As the Mercury News reported, Williams was inside the home decorating the tree with ornaments she had just made with the children when Cook arrived, and a confrontation ensued.
Though what happened next was not exactly clear, a police report claimed that Cook locked herself in a bathroom and called 911, refusing to leave. When she left the bathroom, she pulled a gun from her coat pocket and shot Williams to death, the report noted. By that point, Cook’s ex-husband and the father to the twins returned home and restrained Cook until police arrived.
The mural is on Crenshaw Boulevard in South Los Angeles, showing images of the Black Panthers and other prominent figures on a site that has celebrated decades of black history. On Friday, someone painted swastikas on the mural in an act of vandalism that has roiled the community and attracted national attention. As NBC News reported, vandals targeted the portion of the mural honoring the Black Panther Party, spray-painting swastikas over the faces of several people depicted in the mural.
The 7,880-square-foot mural was compiled by a dozen Los Angeles artists in 2002, the report noted. It had become a point of pride in the community, and many were upset to see it was defaced.
